What Actually Happens in Your First Therapy Session with Us?

YOU DID IT

Taking the step to book a therapy appointment is an act of incredible courage. Yet, as the date of your first session approaches, it is completely normal to feel a sudden wave of anxiety. You might find yourself wondering, “What am I even going to say?” or “I think I made a big mistake”. I have even seen clients sitting in their cars thinking about leaving!

OUR APPROACH TO COUNSELING IN NEWBURGH, INDIANA

If you are feeling nervous, please know that you are not alone. Walking into a room—or opening a virtual video link—to share your deepest stressors, anxiety, or low moods with a professional can feel incredibly vulnerable. We want to take the mystery out of the process. Your first session is not an interrogation; it is simply a safe space to land.

In our practice, we use a compassionate blend of traditional talk therapy and structured tools like CBT, DBT, and ACT. However, in your very first session, you do not need to worry about fixing everything right away. Our primary goal is simply to get to know you and understand the heavy weights you have been carrying. You are the expert on your life, and we are here to help you map out the terrain.

WHAT TO EXPECT: 4 THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN

We will spend the first few minutes reviewing any paperwork, confidentiality rules, and ensuring you feel comfortable in the space.

We will invite you to share what brought you to therapy. Whether it is a major life stressor, persistent depression, or overwhelming anxiety, you can share as much or as little as you feel ready to disclose.

We will talk about what a “better life” looks like for you. Do you want concrete coping skills to handle panic attacks? Or do you just need a confidential space to process a major life transition?

Before the session ends, we will discuss how often we should meet and give you a brief idea of the tools (like CBT or mindfulness strategies) we think will help you.

You do not have to have your life completely figured out to start therapy. In fact, coming exactly as you are—overwhelmed, tired, or anxious—is the perfect place to begin. You have been carrying these major life stressors on your own for long enough. Let us help carry some of that weight. If you are ready to take that first courageous step toward feeling grounded again, (click here to schedule a free 15-minute consultation) with one of our therapists today. Let’s take the first step together.
